Harrell Says Boeing Bill will be Fast-Tracked

COLUMBIA — The state Senate has approved a bill providing $120 million to the Boeing Co. in exchange for a major expansion of the company’s operations in North Charleston.

By a 34-4 vote, senators today gave the third of three needed readings to the legislation. The bill next heads to the House.

House Speaker Bobby Harrell’s office said in a release this afternoon that the bill will be fast-tracked and will be up for debate on Tuesday when legislators return to Columbia.

Harrell, a Charleston Republican, released a statement praising Boeing and the Senate.

“This legislation is about jobs and our state’s responsibilities when it comes to core economic infrastructure needs,” he said. “That is why we have set this economic development bill on a fast track to become law. The Senate deserves real credit for swiftly getting this important job creating legislation to the House, particularly Sen. Hugh Leatherman who has always been a dependable leader when it comes to job creation.”
