Boeing bound: Road project would link Boeing facilities and could ease North Charleston traffic.

Palmetto Commerce Parkway in North Charleston has become a bustling industrial strip known for its proximity to Boeing facilities, but the road lacks a direct connection to Boeing’s Dreamliner assembly plant. An $80 million Charleston County road project could change that situation, and it could help not only Boeing and its suppliers but commuters traveling through North Charleston, as Boeing-related traffic shifts to the new route.

Charleston County Councilman Elliott Summey said the road connection could potentially divert 50,000 vehicles from roads including Interstate 26, Ashley Phosphate Road, and Dorchester Road.

The project calls for relocating and connecting part of South Aviation Avenue on the Charleston International Airport property to an intersection on Ashley Phosphate Road where Palmetto Commerce Parkway ends.

The result would be a direct route from Boeing’s aircraft interiors plant in Palmetto Commerce Park to Boeing’s aircraft assembly plant near Charleston International Airport, and a roadway running from Ladson Road all the way to International Boulevard near the airport and Interstate 526.

“The opening of the Palmetto Commerce Parkway directly resulted in the investment of ten new industrial expansions within the first 18 months it’s been open,” said commercial real estate broker Mike White, vice president of CBRE Carmody. “This additional connection with Aviation Avenue will drive even greater commercial investment into “The Boeing Corridor,” the nine-mile stretch between the Interiors Plant and the Final Assembly campus.”
